I’ve complained before about not being able to find the integration module installation
for allowing IBM Director to be integrated into SMS. There is a link on IBM’s site
to download what they refer to as the Upward
Integration Module (UIM) for IBM Director 4.20. I’m not sure if it has been available
all along or if I just [...]

SMS Clients Outside the Firewall : Part II
In a previous post, I discussed how we discovered that the SMS client would communicate
with its management point from outside the firewall if the management point could
be contacted over port 80. This required that the sms client be installed on the computer
while it was on the domain, then carried outside.
We use only Active Directory and [...]

Blogroll Changes
OK, I lost my list of blogs when I moved to a different server. I’ll be adding them
back slowly. The first one I have added back is Jonathan
Hardwick’s. It focuses on MOM and SMS. It appears from his site that he is leading
the push for the community sites for both of these products.
In addition, two [...]

SMS Clients Outside the Firewall : Part I
I decided to take a couple of posts here to discuss some of the findings we have made
in our lab regarding SMS clients outside of our Corporate Firewall. Back in the pre-beta
discussions, Microsoft talked a lot about how the Mobile Client (now the Advanced
Client) would be able to report to SMS no matter where it [...]

Block SMS from installing to certain servers
From an upcoming book by Rod Trent: While the Windows Remote Client Installation method
is useful for distributing the SMS client to Windows 2000/NT computers, there are
some computers you should exclude from this installation type (e.g. a computer that
doesn’t meet the requirements outlined in Microsoft’s HCL, or a computer that does
not have an adequate amount of [...]

Simulating a simple client request to IIS on the management point
We are running several other websites on our server that hosts the sms website. We
use host headers and by following the steps below found out that we did not have a
host header on the default website with the management point name.
From the microsoft client faq:
Q.
None of my
clients are receiving any policies. What should I check? [...]

SMS 2003 Reporting – Computers without specific software in Add Remove Programs
We had a request recently to display all users who do not have office 2003 installed.
Now there may be a better way to do this, and if so please feel free to comment,
but there is a report for Computers with specific software in Add Remove Programs which
is preferable to looking for individual executables since office is [...]

WMI calls fail remotely with permission denied
While troubleshooting SMS clients I’ve run across several machines that will not allow
me to query WMI information remotely. For example, running the following command gives
me the prompt for the user password.
c:\>systeminfo /s:remotePC
Type the password for domain\user:
ERROR: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password
This happens even though I am a domain admin and should have [...]
