The source directory “\\<remote server\packages$\source”
for package “BG100030″ does not exist. The operating system reported error 5: Access
is denied.

Solution: Make sure you have specified a valid package source directory on the
Data Source tab in the Package Properties dialog box in the SMS Administrator console.
If you specify a local path, it must be a local path on the site server. If you specify
a path on a network drive, verify that the path exists and that the path is typed
correctly.

We started getting this error after we moved a directory we used for package source
files to a new server. We were actually accessing the path through a DFS link, like
this:

\\domain\dfs\sms\source —> points to \\server\packages$

The first problem was that the machine account did not have read/list NTFS permissions
on the packages folder.

The second problem was that the machine account did not have read share permissions
on the permissions$ share. DFS uses the share to access the files, so even if you
had appropriate NTFS permissions, you would not be able to access the folder without
share level permissions.

This was released in November, but I wanted to get a link up so I could remember to

This was released in November, but I wanted to get a link up so I could remember to
test it. This tool allows you to set a desired configuration for a server or computer,
then see all the computers that do not match the configuration.

From the website…

Define desired configuration models and enable SMS 2003 to proactively monitor configuration
settings for compliance. Administrators can create and edit XML models through an
authoring GUI to define desired configuration values and check for configuration compliance
such as registry settings, files, software updates, and service packs.
